The Linden Tree: Sculpture with Clay French fries, by Sawyer. Young students are encouraged to jump in and start working with clay, after we have given a bit of instruction about technical things. Most have no trouble turning out things they have seen or are thinking about. Sometimes a student will say he or she does not know what to do, but we explain by fool around with the clay a bit, one's "art brain" will take over. And it always does. While the conscious mind is important in many ways, especially in carrying out practical things, other parts of the brain are often way ahead of it, and many people, especially children, often think nonverbally.
